The original tiny house

Some say that Henry David Thoreau was the founder of the current interest in tiny home living.
I have long admired Thoreau, and his book “Walden”, is among my favorites.
The idea of living free and simply holds a lot of appeal for this old boy.
But Thoreau only lived within such modest means for two years before moving on to a larger home.
Today many are starting with this size space and squeezing into it a kitchen, a bath, a laundry room, and a staircase.

When is small, too small?

Hmmm…
Appliances on the front porch…
The age old dilemma…
Yes, or no?
It’s one of the big problems with the tiny, tiny house movement. Certainly there is plenty of room in one of these structures for a person… but not for all of the stuff that we need to satisfy our current lifestyles.

As cute as it can be… but is it too small?

A highly detailed small home

Just look at all the detail in this small home!
Amazing.
If I had to guess I’d assume this was a mail-order home. Just pick the house you want out of the catalog and have it delivered, assembly required.
I wish the company that created this home package was still in business.

Start small, think small… consider a corn crib

Above is the corn crib of Ephrain Bales.
I want one just like it!

And below is Bob Johnson’s corn crib…

One more…

What is it about corn cribs that makes them so endearing?
A structure like this would look great in anyone’s back yard, would be handy to have, inexpensive to build, and would give anyone who built one the skills and confidence to build their own log home.

Why are house sizes regulated?

The smallest house in Charleston, South Carolina.
As cute as a button.
I’m sure it’s admired and loved by everyone there.
And, I’m equally sure it’s now illegal to build another one as small as this.
Go figure.
