“Back in the day” there was no heavy equipment available to easily level out a house site.
Larger homes would adapt to steeply sloped sites by incorporating walk-out basements on one side of the house. But homes of more modest means would be built to conform to the site, as seen in this house.
BTW… this home, with the aid of two stone chimneys is quite the charmer isn’t she?

Greetings from Kentucky Noah ! Stumbled on to your site and it’s a wonderful site and been enjoying your knowledge…Oh ! and the beautiful pictures ! My wife and I have been offered some land from our Son and we have kicked around building a small cabin for years so we’re get’in up there in years so He wants us close to kind of be there for us and it’s a dream come true not to speak of such an opportunity and my thought of adding value to His property. After looking at your web site it’s inspired us even more.and I hope we’re not out a line to ask if you could share some Links to help us get even more ideas but mostly Info. on small one bedroom cabin. I know your a busy Man and we will completely understand if we don’t get a reply. In the meantime we will enjoy Big Time your great website.and share with Family & Friends ! Thanks Noah !
Thank you for you kind words! And congratulations on your many blessings. I’m a big fan of Kentucky… many generations of my ancestory, from my father back to the 1700’s lived there. I’ve been searching for a long while for others who currently know what I know and do what I do, and have come up empty, which is one of the reasons I’m sharing here on line. I do have a long list of my favorite books on the main page of this site… it’s a red button on the right side near the top. I’ve got a lot of ideas for future steps that I intend to take to help people just like you… a book is in the works (slowly)… I’ll be releasing some of my classic hand drawn plans that I used to build cabins, and I intend to put together courses and videos to guide folks step by step through the process. There is a ton of free info on this site… all a bit scattered I admit… but each posting has a tidbit in how to get the home of your dreams. Thanks again for posting… and know, that if you ever have a specific question I’ll do my best to answer, just post it here or email me at Noah@handmadehouses.com
