“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Do dreams come true? My Mother is going to die within the next week or so and I shall be alone. I’m 58, divorced, grown kids and 2 siblings left (one died last May). I love all the cabins I see and I’ve narrowed it down to gas as opposed to wood as I am disabled and can’t haul wood let alone cut it. I only need a small place about 600 sq ft. at most. What I don’t see in the plans is a place for me to put out my oil paints, easel, and brushes. I need light as well. I’m looking at land in NE Oregon and bless my Mom I will have about $100k to work with. Do you have any ideas on how to narrow it down? I’ve spent many nights lately doing my night watch looking at floor plans and costs and I just plain can’t afford them due to them being bigger than I need. I just want a simple life where I can do my art and raise a few chickens and my Border Collie and I can do Therapy work at the nearby facilities that would like it. We are in training now and I’ll be certified in about 1-1 1/2 yrs. I do know a lot about construction but not enough to do it my self. I’ve looked into cob houses, yurts, etc and I’m not satisfied with them and a thatched roof is a maybe. I won’t have much time when Mom does pass as I can’t afford the rent on the land her Manufactured home sits on. Once I find a piece of land and buy it I can live in something cheap till my new home is done. I’ve never owned a home in my live and it’s been a dream of mine to actually own the land my home sits on. If you know of any contractors or realtors that might be able to lead me in a good direction it might help. I wrote you before and you said you didn’t know of any there. If I could get an inspector to say the house was salvageable then would it be an option to weatherize part of it temp. till the rest could be done? I don’t know which way to go and I don’t want to end up in a mobile home again. Thanks for reading this long comment and I’m sorry to put you on the spot but I have no one left (other than my son and one daughter who rarely talks to me). When Mom leaves I will truly be alone and I’m scared, excited and nervous all at the same time. You have wisdom and insight that I can easily relate to. Thank you
Denice,
You do have a lot on your plate.
My prayers are with you.
The advice you seek is well beyond the typical construction wisdom I have to share, or that I am qualified to address.
All things considered I would recommend for you to find a place to rent that reflects the home and lifestyle that you would like to live. Once there pour everything you have into creating an online income that centers around your talents and interests. (listen to podcasts like Smart Passive Income and Internet Business Mastery) Remove “disability” and “financial restrictions” from your life… and at that point revisit the dream of having your own place.
