A house cannot be too tall

She is tall and trim, and pleasing to the eye.
This cabin is a full two-stories tall with a steep pitched roof and a towering chimney.
The porch roof on the front is also unusually steep pitched. This roof pitch sacrifices any windows that could have been installed on the second floor of this side of the cabin.
The “cat slide” roof on the back of the house aesthetically allows for a larger kitchen addition than what would be possible with a more typical roof design.
The second floor rooms are likely somewhat dark with little natural light coming in.
The extra wide wood shakes create quite a different look on the outside don’t they?
Bought from a sawmill, this form of siding would be an inexpensive, easy to install, alternative to board-and-batten.

Trim… to paint or not… and what color?

There is no right or wrong answer.

About have of the cabins that I have built or seen over the years have had neutral-colored paint trim, or, the trim has been left natural and unpainted. The other half of these cabins the owners have decided to “liven the cabin up” with bright colors, most often red or green. I can’t say that I have a preference, they all are attractive.

It’s more about the shade of the color, than whether or not there is a color. (avoid lime green for example)

Finding an old log cabin to rebuild

2019-06-29T09:44:04+00:00

Even after decades of people salvaging old log cabins there is still an abundant supply available.

Where are they?

Many are hidden under the siding of houses that simply appear to be old farmhouses… like this wonderful home.

“The stars will never align and the traffic lights of life will never be all green at the same time.
The universe doesn’t conspire against you, but it doesn’t go out of it’s way to line up the pins either. Conditions are never perfect.
“Someday” is a dream that will take your dreams to the grave with you.”

It’s time to turn your dream cabin into reality

For those who get to kick back in their cabins and not have to rush off to a job in the city… a tip of the hat to you!
For those of you that had to lock up their cabin yesterday and head back to “real life”, just know that that cabin is waiting there for you.

And, for those who dream of having that special place in the country, whether log, or stone, or timber frame… set a goal for the near future that you take those first steps in turning that dream of a handmade house into reality.

Never build a log home with a kit

2019-06-29T09:43:50+00:00

Log cabin kits always seem to fall so short of the standard provided by our ancestors. The “handworked” surface added to this kit in no way resembles that of the vintage cabin also pictured here. I will never understand how some view the act of abusing new wood as “aging”.
