Antique log cabin

This little log outbuilding is likely 200 years old.
It probably took the man who built it a few months of his spare time.
He could have gone to Loews and bought a pre-assembled shed. 😉
(That would have been easier… and quicker).
But, he made this choice.
And so, by choosing to build with his hands, he left behind a treasure to descendants, people that he would never know, a charming outbuilding, one that they could use and enjoy.
If he did nothing else during his life, at least he left behind a lasting legacy of his time here on Earth.
The workmanship of the men and women of our past inspire us all today to ponder what we will leave behind for future generations.

When it comes time to build your home… or even a shed… think “outside the box”.

This is a outbuilding that I built for myself… Outbuildings… you can’t get enough of them!

This was one of those “weekend projects” that took me the entire summer to put together. I have such an understanding, and patient, wife. God bless her.

I came up with a design that was historic, yet uncommon. It cost no more to arrange lumber differently than everyone else does. So why not?

I found an old antique door, and some salvaged windows to use… I saved some money in the process and created something unique and special in doing so. Win, win.

And the picket railing?… I found it at the local landfill. It took a little repair but someone else’s trash became my treasure!

And the red paint? hey, if you got it, flaunt it!

Here we have an interesting, and very attractive, outbuilding behind one of the historic homes at Colonial Williamsburg.

This little shed would cost only a little bit more to build than those pre-assembled units found at the local lumber supplier.

Outbuildings

A “homeplace” is more than just a house.
The surrounding outbuildings are just as important to the daily lives of those who live there. Outbuildings tend to draw us out of the main house where we will then find ourselves enjoying the great outdoors.
And that, is a good thing.
Focused attention needs to be given to these minor structures with regard to design and location.
