Here we have what is known as a “shy cabin”… often found deep in the woods, peeking out from behind a tree… and, what a tree it is!
How about that stone chimney? Nice.

A small historic log cabin

It seems whenever I post photos of cabins online that small ones like this draw the most attention and the greatest number of comments. I can understand why.

Log cabin – Farmhouse

You know, it’s these homes with simple designs that I find most visually striking.
Take this cabin for instance… I doubt if there is another one out there like her.
There are no fancy details to be seen, and no faux embellishments have been added, and yet… this home has a bold appearance about her not seen on modern houses.
I would think a new home built with these lines and using high quality materials, like perhaps… a slate roof, antique logs, and a timber-frame addition, would make for an incredible dream home.

A well worn path…

What a great cabin.  It appears the cabin on the right was likely the original home and that the one of the left, with it’s “cat’s head” roof was later on creating a breezeway between the two.

A home that stirs the soul

I often catch myself pausing for a few minutes when I look at a photo like this… there is an unusual mix of calm and wonder that I feel.

I’m at home.

And, the intensity of  these feelings is only magnified when I stand before a place like this in person.

Why is that?

What is it about these vintage structures, made of natural materials, and assembled by hand, that captures me so?

Why is that so many homes fall short of achieving this reaction?

Should this be the goal of someone building a home?… that this be the bar that determines whether a home has passed the test, or not?… it’s a concept worth considering that a home not only serve as a source of habitation, but also as something that stirs the soul?
