Age is beauty

EC2

Stonework improves with age.
Build yourself a stone home.
Then give it a century, or two, and see how pleased you are with the result!

Wide hewn logs

2019-06-29T10:23:06+00:00

Walkers Sister Cabin afternoon 002

A cabin with huge, wonderful, logs.
All hewn with an axe.
And, with half-dovetail notches in the corners.

Large trees were common back when most of these historic cabins were built, and still today wide logs are available with a little bit of looking. I’ve wondered about why more cabins were not made of wide logs like these are, and even wider ones… the only thing I can come up with is the practicality of working with logs… it’s much harder to hew a really wide log… and it’s much harder to lift a really wide log.

A sweet little cottage home

Exterior photo of The McLemore House African American Museum located at 11th Ave. and Glass Street in Franklin, Tennessee. The McLemore House African American Museum chronicles the struggles, triumphs and important contributions of African Americans in Williamson County and Franklin. JCI PHOTO- Jeff Adkins

A house that is cute… and shy.

Just barely peaking above the fence line.

A modest home… even for it’s day… yet it has two masonry chimneys,  a metal roof, wood siding, a large front porch, and attractive windows… all features missing in most new homes today selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Adam Thoroughgood Home

Here is the Adam Thoroughgood house… perhaps one of the most recognized of historic American homes.
I’ve never been to see the Thoroughgood home, but I did once have a client who had an exact replica of this house built for himself. That house, was… amazing… much more visually impacting than this photo could ever hope to reveal.
The combination of good design, handmade brick, and a slate roof, makes for a fine home.

Log cabin abuse

Help me!
My trim has been painted an awful shade of yellow.
And, I’ve been surrounded by vinyl covered cubes!

Can you think of a better fence than one made of stone?

Yes, it’s true, there are even log cabins in Phoenix, Arizona.
This replica is of an original pioneer cabin.

Metal siding on a house

2019-06-29T10:22:59+00:00

IMG_1184

Here’s an intriguing cottage.
It appears to be a new home, built using salvaged materials.
I have never used metal roofing materials for siding, but you know, I kinda like the look. And, it would make for a low cost, zero maintenance option to wood siding
I understand that metal panel siding is popular in the state of Texas, but unheard of here in Virginia other than for new outbuildings.
What do you think of this rustic cabin?

Why are house sizes regulated?

2019-06-29T10:22:58+00:00

The smallest house in Charleston, South Carolina.
As cute as a button.
I’m sure it’s admired and loved by everyone there.
And, I’m equally sure it’s now illegal to build another one as small as this.
Go figure.
