A stone roof

A stone roof… it’s hard for me to wrap my head around the idea that a roof can be built that would last… well… practically forever.

What do you do with your spare time?

I would think that a man could build one of these, working on weekends, in five years, maybe more.
And it would stand for centuries.
He wouldn’t need a gym membership.
His wife wouldn’t worry about him getting into mischief.
And when finished he could keep an eye out for invading armies.
It doesn’t get any better than that!
Or… he could put the same effort into building a dream home in the country. Now that’s an idea!

Two patterns of stonework in the same house

An ancient home in Peru… The same stone laying technique, of carefully laying the corners in a horizontal pattern while filling the space in between with a random pattern, can also be found here on some early American structures.

Stone… the ultimate building material

Stone is a marvelous building material… gorgeous to look at, free for the gathering in many places., zero maintenance, and, it will last… well… forever.

You can let your imagination run wild when you build with stone.

brintonback

You can build classic designs, ones that have proven their appeal over centuries, ones that will be appreciated for centuries to come.

Stone, the ultimate alternative building method that we have today, and also, the one that we’ve had for millennia.

Age is beauty

Stonework improves with age.
Build yourself a stone home.
Then give it a century, or two, and see how pleased you are with the result!

Stone monument

Washington_Monument_State_Park2

This is the first Washington Monument dedicated to the memory of George Washington. It was erected by the citizens of Boonsboro, Maryland in 1827.

“On July 4, 1827 at 7 a.m., most of Boonsboro’s 500 inhabitants assembled at the public square. Behind the Stars and Stripes and stepping spiritedly to the music of a fife and drum corps, they marched two miles up the mountain to the monument site. The citizens worked until noon and then held a dedication ceremony and lunch. They resumed work and by 4 p.m. the monument stood fifteen feet high on a 54-foot circular base. The day ended with the reading of the Declaration of Independence and a three round salute fired by three Revolutionary War veterans. The workers returned that September to finish. Upon its completion, the monument stood 30 feet high.”

It has been rebuilt several times and is currently closed to the public after being struck by lightning this past summer.

Quality vs Quantity

2019-06-29T10:01:53+00:00

Oh my.
She is so fine.
When contemplating the design and construction of a home, the first decision to be made is “quality vs quantity”.
The owner of this small stone home chose the highest level of quality. They could have had a vinyl clad home, twice as large as this one, for the same price.
It’s a tough choice to make.
Living small is challenging, while living large is so tempting.
We naturally want both, quality and quantity, but few people have the financial resources for a large home built as well as it can be.
So, is quality worth the cost?

A painting like this speaks for itself.

There is little that I can add to describe the beauty and permanence of a stone cottage.

What will your legacy be?

Stone walls.
Stone roof.
Zero maintenance.
And a joy to look at!
What a charmer.
The life expectancy of such a structure (if it can avoid earthquakes and bulldozers)?… certainly hundreds of years… perhaps thousands of years.
What else can a person do during a lifetime that can impact and bless people that far into the future?
