A thousand words

IMG_1372

They say a photo speaks a thousand words.
What words do you hear?
When you look at this photo do you feel sorry for the folks who live here?… on how impoverished they are… on how small their home is… on the possessions they must not have? Why surely they must be cramped in there.  Do they even have cell phone reception or high speed internet?
Likely, if you have found yourself here on this site it’s not sympathy that you feel towards the inhabitants of this house but rather a tinge of jealousy. There is a peace that can be found within a space like this that is lost in our modern world. Perhaps the transition to a home like this would be too hard for us to undertake… but if we could bring some of this charm into our own homes, or have a place like this to retreat to in order to recharge our inner soul… well, that would be goal worth striving towards wouldn’t it?

The attraction of a log home

IMG_1968

Log homes are like magnets to us humans… they just draw people to them.
For some reason they also seem to attract wagon wheels… lol
The little stream out front adds a lot to the serenity of this place, doesn’t it?

Whispering pines

IMG_1967

I do love a pine forest.  Some people don’t care for them. Pine trees are shallow rooted and brittle, so they don’t fair well during strong winds like those created by a hurricane.. But, there is nothing else like the feel you get when walking through a grove of them.

On a windy day, they are known to whisper.

Small log cabin

I suppose any ceiling height over six feet and a few inches is a luxury… a luxury I fully appreciate!

Lower ceiling heights of yesterday

Yes indeed people were shorter back in the day… but lower heights were also easier to build and quicker to get done when so many other chores needed to be done.

One step at a time

IMG_1315

Building a log cabin, one section at a time, makes a lot of sense, and it produces a very attractive home. The simple break in this roof line adds so much to the appearance of this home.

There is no shortage of old cabins to save or salvage

IMG_1384

The mailbox still stands out front, but this cabin has long been abandoned as a home.
She looks a bit sad doesn’t she?
Nobody wants her.

🙁

As simple as it can be

A log home… with a porch and a metal roof.

Nothing here to impress the neighbors.

But it feels like home.

Flooring… character vs perfection

IMG_1435

What do you think of this stone floor?
Certainly it’s very attractive.
But would it be too “textured” for your daily use?

I once encountered a woman who told me her tale of woe, how she was living in her new home and that a gap had appeared between two of her floorboards (about an eighth of inch). She told me of her frustration that her builder had not come back to repair or replace the flooring in that room because of this issue. She was pondering suing the builder and asked my opinion. My only response for her was to be thankful that only one board had such a small gap in her house, that her house contained thousand of pieces of wood whose behavior was beyond the control of the man who installed them.

It’s issues like this why so many good builders close their doors.
