A log and stone home

Log and stone.
What a great home!
If I may be so bold as to suggest a “if I had built this” comment…
I just can’t help myself…
It’s the way I am… lol…
It’s challenging to find a more attractive house than the ones that feature the combination of log and stone.
I would have made one little adjustment on this home that I feel would have made it much more appealing… I would have built the stone addition a different size than the log section, rather than having it as a continuation of the existing log structure.
Here I would have made the stone section one-and-a-half story tall and I would have recessed it a foot or two back from the front of the log section. This subtle change would have made each section “pop” and celebrated each section’s uniqueness.
And, of course, (while I’m making changes), I’d have added a welcoming porch across the front of the cabin.

This cabin’s overhanging roof creates a sheltered exterior space.

Log church

What a great log structure. I would imagine that this cabin was built by the entire community as a place where they could all gather and fellowship, (which only impresses me more with this log building).

Notice the logs that are above the front doorway and how much more aged they are. Likely there was once a roof above the door and these logs were exposed to the splashing rain over a period of decades. When building a cabin I often give extra attention to the logs above a porch.

The elegance of simplicity

How is it that such a simple structure can hold us so captive?

I could try to answer the question with “why I think this small cabin is special”…but for today, for this inviting place… I’ll leave it for you to ponder the question and come up with your own answer.

After all, it’s the questions we ask ourselves that make this life so special. 🙂

A simple decorative touch

Just because there is snow on the roof doesn’t mean there isn’t a fire inside.

Isn’t it amazing how much the simple wreath adds to the beauty of this home? Without it this home might appear cold and abandoned… but with this simple loving touch the home becomes… inviting.

A great design for a hillside home

A “whitewashed” mountainside cabin.

Notice how well she fit’s the site. And how well a walk out basement works on a slope.

Poplar logs

These are poplar logs… one of my favorites.
Poplar logs are often among the widest logs found on old cabins.
Poplar is an abundant species of wood, it grows straight and relatively knot-free, and it is a joy to hew and notch. These massive logs tend to “soften” in appearance as they age and are quite tempting to caress with the hand as they will not splinter. They are also among the best logs for insulation R-values.
I have no idea why log cabin kit homes do not offer poplar logs… it’s baffling to me.
If you look closely you can see that wire lathing has been applied between the logs and it is now ready for an application of mortar.

Finding an old log cabin to rebuild

Even after decades of people salvaging old log cabins there is still an abundant supply available.

Where are they?

Many are hidden under the siding of houses that simply appear to be old farmhouses… like this wonderful home.
