The combination of stone and log

I do love the combination of log and stone.
On this cabin we used limestone that we gathered from the Shenandoah Valley here in Virginia.
I thought the copper roof and bow window of the stone section added a lot to the overall appeal of this home.

How about pausing for a moment and remembering the things you are thankful for today.

A big old porch on the front of this cabin with enough room to great plenty of visitors.

Hidden logs

Notice the still remaining painted corner-board. This greyed and weathered cabin was covered in siding as so many old cabins were at the time. When nearly everyone lived in a log home having a wood sided home was highly desirable.
Many of the old farmhouses that we see today have logs hidden within.

A cabin with character

She is not the straightest cabin in the world.

And, the inconsistencies in workmanship reveal that this cabin was likely built by the homeowner and not a team of experienced builders.  There is certainly no disciplined German workmanship on display with this fine old home.

That’s one of the things I love about cabins… they aren’t complicated enough to scare off anyone from building them.

After all these years

After all these years, and a fine partial restoration, this cabin still stands proud and straight.
And… she’s mighty attractive I might add.
All she needs is her missing chimney restored, a new front door, and a few windows and then it’s time to move in.
And, oh yeah, a porch on the front would be so nice… you just have to have a porch. 🙂
