Let’s look closely at this cottage and see if we can discover what makes this home so special…
By building a small house these homeowners had the financial means to add many special details to their home such as… a masonry chimney, a handcrafted roof, a bay window, lavish landscaping, and dramatic outdoor lighting.
It’s the age old battle of quality vs quantity.
Of course most of us want both… but the reality is that’s often not an option.
These folks chose quality.

The large branch on that tree out front would have been perfect for a long rope swing.
I betcha this house was once full of children, all who eventually grew up and went off to the big city to seek their fortune.
But, they left a real treasure behind.
Such a sweet little house.

The clawfoot bathtub

When it comes to comfort, a clawfoot tub cannot be beat.
Here we have a modern take on the traditional soaking tub.
I encourage all my clients that when the time comes to pick out their tub that it is important that they get into the tub on the showroom floor, sit down, and lean back… most modern tubs, including Jacuzzis, are instruments of torture in comparison to these cast iron classics.

Good fencing

There’s a lot to be admired about a home that has good fencing.
A new home built on a raw piece of land tends to be a little bit out of place until outbuildings and a perhaps a bit of fencing is added. These extras tend to anchor a home to the environment.

One year anniversary!

Oh my… one year ago the first posting was made here at Handmade Houses!
And, at the time… no one read it.
Yes, it got zero response… nothing but crickets chirping in the background.
Since then over 1,000 posts have been made and this wonderful community has grown to over 48,000 members!
Wow! Give yourself a pat on the back!
I have a hard time imagining what a gathering of that size would look like, but I do take great comfort knowing that I’m not the only one who dreams of owning the perfect handmade home.
Thank you… each and every one of you… for your support, for your encouragement, your likes, your comments, and your shares.
It means a lot to me.
I spent the first eight months or so sharing the stories and the steps in building some of my favorite projects. And the last few months I’ve been posting photos of houses that inspire me to do better. I hope that you have enjoyed them and have gotten something out of them. There is more to come!

Timber frame

Within nearly every old mill you will likely discover a massive timber frame structure.
It takes great strength to withstand the might of a river, the movements of large machinery, and the weight of tons of grains.
A timber frame is up to the task.
And if it works for a mill… just imagine how well it serve you as part of your home.
